Telecom Namibia has taken note of various scams that have frequently been doing the rounds on our social media platforms, as well as via text and phone calls.
Here are a few examples of potential scams that an individual may encounter:
- Phone scam - phone scammer claims to be a Telecom Namibia employee enquiring about the customers’ internet speed. The scammer then offers the customers a speed upgrade at a fee. If the customer agrees they will be issued with a ‘code’ which the customer is required to insert for online banking transaction. The code enables the scammer to receive money from the customer via e-, blue- or easywallet. Phone scams can come in many forms, but they usually tend to make similar promises or offer service upgrades at a fee. Scammers will often ask you to pay in a way that makes it hard for you to get your money back such as the electronic wallet method or using a money transfer App. Anyone who asks you to pay in that manner is a scammer and if you receive a phone call that you believe is part of a scam, hang up and call the Telecom Namibia Customer Care Centre for verification of authenticity.
- Text message-based scam - text message is sent from a Telecom Namibia mobile number and baits the customer with a reward in exchange for information. Scammers send fake text messages to trick you into giving them your personal information, which they use to gain access to your email, bank, or other accounts. The scammers use a variety of ever-changing stories to try to rope you in and may promise freebies. If you get a text message that you weren’t expecting and it asks you to give some personal information, don’t click on any links. The scammers contact potential victims through SMS, or other methods in an attempt to obtain personal, banking or other valuable personal information.
- Online survey (customer reward program) scam - the survey pops up on selected social platforms and offers fake free gifts or other bogus inducements in return for completing the survey. The survey is hosted on a fake domain using our company details. We request all members of the public to refrain from taking part in this survey as such surveys are an attempt to acquire personal information of customers.
Please note Telecom Namibia will not ask for information about your account and/or any services by phone call or text and we furthermore appeal to the public not to open any survey links in circulation, claiming to be from Telecom Namibia. We will notify stakeholders through established channels when we require information. Telecom Namibia distances itself from the above-mentioned, as well as other similar scams. Telecom Namibia is not responsible for any of the above-mentioned scams and shall not be liable for any loss of property/identity theft, or any other matters related to these scams.
What to do if you are suspecting a phishing attack:
If you are unsure about a text message, phone call or online survey you have received, please contact the Telecom Namibia Customer Care Centre on 11000 or send a WhatsApp message to 0852111111, or alternatively inbox us on our Social media platforms.
