TN Mobile, the mobile business of Telecom Namibia, today announced that it is sponsoring the 3rd edition of the Windhoek City Run which takes place on Sunday, 20 July 2014. Close to 600 people are expected to take part in the 2014 event compared to the 500 participants in prior years.
TN Mobile is sponsoring the run this year as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility and in support of the wider vision to improve health across the community by engaging more people with sport.
“Sports is one of the areas from which society gets its innovative strength. As an inspiration to many people, sports creates a sense of community and enables understanding across all possible human barriers. That is why we lay emphasis on sponsoring sporting events, because participants get exercise, positive social interaction and a good time,” says Oiva Angula, senior manager for corporate communications and public relations at Telecom Namibia. “As a service provider, TN Mobile is honoured to be part of the third edition of the Windhoek City Run and is looking forward to bringing new energy and life to this much-loved event,” Angula said.
He said that TN Mobile, as a young brand launched in August last year, had already started to get involved in sponsorship of local sport and events, as part of its commitment to corporate and social responsibility, and as an important component of its business strategy.
“We feel that TN Mobile must start to get to the very heart of where community support is needed in order to promote and support initiatives that bring about positive community advancement. Additionally, we already invested heavily in sporting events, and the Windhoek City Run is another opportunity to expand our investment in community through the medium of sports,” Angula said.
The TN Mobile Windhoek City Run is arranged in partnership with Otb Sport and Windhoek Harriers in celebration of the City of Windhoek. Coca Cola Namibia will sponsor drinks to the runners and Occupational Care Namibia (OCNAM) will assist with route logistics and water tables.
The run routes have been designed so as to showcase the best the City of Windhoek has to offer, with the 21.1km and full marathon wind their way past the Old State House, Independence Memorial, Supreme Court, Parliament, Tintenpalast, Gibeon Meteorites, Hochland Trails, the Christus Kirsche, Zoo Park and other interesting sites of Windhoek.
Participants have a choice between a 5km fun run/walk; 10km walk/run; 21.1km walk/run and a marathon.
“We are putting in a huge effort for this event. To guide people through the city we are looking at placing around 50 Marshalls to make sure people do not run the wrong way. There will also be 7 water tables manned by Telecom Namibia staff. We suspect this may be one of the hardest city marathons in the world, as participants need to contend with the high altitude as well as a very hilly route,” said Yvonne Brinkmann of Otb Sport.
“We thank the City of Windhoek and its Traffic Department for assisting with the safety of the athletes during the event,” Brinkmann said.
TN Mobile has generously increased this year’s prize money to over N$44,000 in cash prizes from the N$200,000 worth of sponsorship. For complete breakdown of prize money, entries and other race details go to www.otbsport.com. Online entries close on Wednesday, 16 July 2014.
