What are the features and applications?
- ISDN BRA provides twice as many phone lines (B-channels) per number of copper-wire pairs as analogue
- File transfer of text documents , the customer can send and receive spreadsheets, graphics, diagrams, audio and video clips. To do this you need a computer with an ISDN card or external ISDN modem installed. ISDN cards and modems will be available at computer companies. Computer companies can install the ISDN card at a fee or the customers can install it by themselves.
- Facsimile: you can connect a normal fax or digital fax (Group 4 fax). Telecom Namibia doesn’t sell faxes currently, so customers can buy their fax machines at any vendor.
- Video conference: meeting can be set up involving people in the remote locations at short notice and without wasted travel time and money. To do this customers can buy or rent the videoconference system from Telecom Namibia once the CPE tender has been awarded. Customers can also install an ISDN videoconference card, camera and telephone handset in their PCs from the computer companies or any other vendor.
- Video surveillance: Security companies can do remote surveillance of retail outlets and warehouses. To do these customers need to buy their own surveillance equipments. Telecom Namibia will provide the lines and the NT2ab (with analogue ports).
- Telemedicine: distant clinic can show X-RAY image to the professional doctors in the urban area.
Teleducation: Universities and Technicons can set-up their big videoconference class room in remote area.
- Remote access to LAN (local area network): People working from home can log on to their company’s LAN via their home PCs connected to ISDN. An example will be Telecom employees logging to Tocnet from their homes.
- Leased Line backup: ISDN lines can be used as backup when leased lines like Digicon are down.
- Modem connection: you can still connect a modem on an ISDN BRA. To do this you need to connect your modem on the analogue ports on the NT2ab. This is probably necessary if you have to connect to local ISP’s.
