Telecom Namibia kicked off the “The Great Namibian Journey – Switch is Fully Mobile” festival at the Mayor’s Park in Ongwediva last Saturday (27 March 2010), giving opportunity to great Namibians to come and showcase their culture.

“The Great Namibian Journey – Switch is Fully Mobile” is a road-show to promote Telecom Namibia’s Switch Mobile services through showcasing Namibian culture and what makes each person a great Namibian. As a truly Namibian company, Telecom Namibia is celebrating the country’s cultural diversity and promoting its products as truly Namibian and for Namibians.

The Oshana festival saw hundreds of people gathering at the Mayor’s Park in Ongwediva to celebrate what makes them truly Namibian, their culture. The event was opened by the councilor of Oshakati East constituency Mr. Lot Kushomwa on behalf of the Governor of the Oshana region, Mr Clemens Kashuupulwa.

The Managing Director of Telecom Namibia, Mr. Frans Ndoroma, informed the public of the significance of Telecom Namibia as a truly Namibian brand and expressed his gratitude to the crowd who came in hordes to celebrate the day with them.

There was no lack of entertainment as well-known Namibian group Ndilimani, kept the crowd on their feet with their pulsating beat. Another well known artist, Mahai, previously known as Dollar Six, kept the crowd jumping to his latest tune, “Celebrating the 060 Nation”, which he composed especially for Telecom Namibia’s “The Great Namibian Journey – Switch is Fully Mobile”.

Exhibitors and participants showcased their cultures in the categories for Food, Dance, Arts & Crafts, and Song.

Groups like the Omege Junior Primary School bedazzled the crowd with their cultural dances, while drama and choir groups like Mweshipandeka and Gabriel Taapopi Shining Stars followed suit.

A panel of judges selected the best exhibitors and performers from each category and awarded handsets and airtime as prizes to the winners.

In his speech, Cllr. Kushomwa said, “We all know that access to affordable telecommunications is a primary driver of economic development, and we certainly want to continue to strengthen the economic development of our region, and the financial independence of all of our citizens.” He applauded Telecom Namibia for the effort they are making to bring affordable telecommunications to the people.

“The Great Namibian Journey – Switch is Fully Mobile” has now made its way to the Omusati region and will culminate in a cultural Festival on Saturday, 3 April, in the town of Outapi.
